 Market Update
After both the Nasdaq Composite and QQQ closed at new 52-week highs on Thursday, the markets gave back some of their gains on Friday, albeit on lower volume. This came as no surprise, as the Nasdaq Composite had been up for 10 of the previous 12 sessions. Within the context of the strong uptrend we have experienced since late March, such down days are to be expected. Friday's action did not affect our Model, and our Buy signal is therefore still active.

 Trend Timing School
The market data that feeds our Model

Previous issues of the Trend Timing School editorial helped establish a foundation to better understand Trend Timing with definitions of the trend, our investment style and personality, and an overview of the technical analysis used in our Model. It is now time to describe what specific market data feeds the Model.

Since we need to recognize broad market trends, the requirements are very stringent. The indicator must represent a wide variety of industries and stocks with diverse market capitalizations. The data source must be well established and regarded, and it must be widely available. Ultimately, the most important prerequisite is for the indicator to be an accurate and reliable proxy for the stock market at large. Years of research and testing pointed us to the Nasdaq Composite Index. The Nasdaq Composite Index measures all domestic and international based common type stocks listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Today, the Nasdaq Composite includes approximately 3,500 companies, more than most other stock market indices. Because it is so broad-based, the Composite is one of the most widely followed and quoted major market indices. The chart below, plotted using adjusted scales to allow proper comparison, demonstrates how well the Nasdaq Composite Index correlates with other market indices. It correlates very well, consistently, and over the long run. Just to confirm the point, we compare the Nasdaq Composite Index with a broad large-cap index (S&P 500), a broad mid-cap index (Russell 2000), and to push the envelope further, an international index (FTSE 100) which is a good approximation of the London Stock Exchange.

A key side benefit of Trend Timing's longer term orientation is this excellent correlation which can be so elusive for those looking at shorter time spans. Yesterday, Thursday 10/16/2003, was a perfect example of how some can lose the forest for the trees, with the Nasdaq moving up about 11 points and other indices moving down, like the Dow Jones Industrials dropping about 11 points. Higher volatility is another useful attribute of the Nasdaq Composite as a trend indicator. This volatility accentuates the amplitude of both price and volume swings and in turn facilitates detecting changes in primary market trend. These are the reasons why we exclusively feed our Model with daily Nasdaq Composite data.

 FAQ of the Week
Question: How can I change my personal information, e.g. I have a new e-mail address or new credit card expiration date?

We receive numerous inquiries on how to change personal information. After logging in, select the "My Profile" navigation tab and you'll be able to change any information in your profile except your User ID which is a unique identifier by which you are recognized. You can change your Password, but remember that capitalization matters. The alternate e-mail address is a fairly recent enhancement which gives you increased flexibility. The signal change e-mail notifications, and the Weekly Update notifications if you have selected to receive them, will be sent to both your primary and alternate e-mail addresses. You can use the alternate address for a family member or friend in case you plan to be away from Internet access, or simply for added comfort that you will not miss the next signal.
Note that your current card number is partially filled with X characters for security reasons. If you have a new credit card number, just type it over the existing one without dashes or spaces, and make sure there are no X characters left. Don't forget to enter your new expiration date and your new Card Verification Number (CVN). The CVN number is very important to avoid rejection when your subscription is renewed. Also modify the name on the card and card type if necessary. When done, click the "Update" button which will cause all information to be transmitted and saved to our secure server using an encrypted session for your protection and privacy.

Warm wishes and until next week.
