Market Update
After the Nasdaq 100 , Russell 2000 and S&P 500 all hit new highs on Wednesday, markets succumbed to selling pressure to close the week on a down note. The move lower was softened by the fact that it occurred on declining volume, showing that institutional investors were not eager to dump their shares. Stocks started retreating Thursday, on the back of disappointing July retail sales and higher oil prices. Employment numbers released Friday came in better than expected, as the economy created over 200,000 new jobs in July. Despite the good news, markets kept sliding as an unexpected 0.4% rise in average hourly earnings renewed inflation concerns and lifted bond yields. Of the three major indices we follow, the Russell 2000 took the brunt of the selling: it lost 2.50% this week. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 only suffered modest losses of 0.63% and 0.22%, respectively, as they were helped by Microsoft shares which jumped more than 8% on the week.

Despite the negative action of the past two days, all three indices rest above both their respective 50-day and 200-day exponential moving averages (EMAs) and our Buy signal remains in effect.

Trend Timing School
TimerTrac performance rankings

Industry record keepers like TimerTrac offer a valuable service to investors as the independent referees in the market timing systems contest. They keep records and rank impartially. Since it has just been over three years that TimerTrac started tracking TimingCube, we decided to take a look, and share it with you. We do not habitually mention competitors in our pages, but since this is independent third party information, we will make an exception to the rule.

For the three-year period ended July 29, 2005, in the "Equity: Long and Short" category, TimingCube ranks first or second for all indices.
Interestingly, we are part of a very small club: of 114 timing services they track in our category, only 9 have been on TimerTrac's radar for at least three years. As can be seen in the rankings table for timing the Russell 2000 index below, the returns vary greatly from a 170.78% gain (by none other than your humble servants) to a loss of 38.22%, all to be compared to a 51.82% gain for simply holding the Russell 2000.
To be fair, for the Nasdaq 100 , PsiTrade came out on top with a gain of 75.01% followed by TimingCube at 45.44%. For the S&P 500 , TimingCube is back in the lead with a return of 66.11%, followed by PsiTrade's 56.44%.

Another point of interest is the huge difference in the number of trades, with only 9 for TimingCube but as much as 212, 67, and 72 respectively for the 3 timers following TimingCube.

We know that no system can be perfect all the time and we certainly do not expect to be always ranked first. Instead we strive to consistently beat the market over long periods of time.
More importantly than ranks and figures the TimerTrac information validates that A) market timing systems can consistently beat the market (Trend Timing works, duh!) and, B) that TimingCube is one of the oldest and best performing services around.
