Market Update
After a big scare on Tuesday when investors got spooked by Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan's comments on interest rates, markets resumed their ascent on Wednesday to finish the week solidly in the black. The Nasdaq experienced big gains, thanks to better-than-expected earnings from several big-cap technology companies such as Motorola and Microsoft. For the week, the Nasdaq 100 gained 3.31%, reasserting its leadership in the process. The Russell 2000 and the S&P 500 finished 1.26% and 0.53% higher, respectively.

The week's action has confirmed that the underlying uptrend is still intact. As such, our current Buy signal remains active.

Trend Timing School
A chat with the founders

As a slight detour from our weekly educational topics we dedicate this editorial to the people behind TimingCube and the Trend Timing system. While we always strive to make our Web-based service as personable and friendly as possible, nothing can replace getting to know the human beings who dreamed up the wealth building system, understanding their backgrounds, philosophy, motivation, as well as their vision for the future.

Let us introduce the TimingCube co-founders Frank Minssieux, President, and Dr. Serge Dacic, Executive Vice President. Instead of repeating our management team's biographies (which can be found on the and can also be accessed from the Press Room section of our Web site), we interviewed them for you.

Frank and Serge, can you share your respective backgrounds with our subscribers?
Frank: As surprising as it sounds at first, both Serge and I have computer science backgrounds and we both grew up in France, although we only met much later in Texas. I spent over 15 years with IBM, both in Europe and the U.S., where I was involved in architecting and designing e-Business solutions. Since coming to the U.S. in the late '80s I have also become an active individual investor and, by necessity, a student of the markets.
Serge: After a period of teaching graduate computer science courses I embarked on a 9 year career with Schlumberger, a global oil and information services firm, that eventually took me to the U.S. in the early 90's. I then became Chief Technology Officer for two separate start-up companies which focused on internet security and online collaboration. In my spare time I also studied investing and the markets.

How did you develop the Trend Timing Model?
Frank: As most people, I became an individual investor to manage my retirement accounts. Unlike most, I developed a serious mistrust of advisors and brokers advising a Buy and Hold approach. And I simply did not have the time required to be an active trader. I instinctively knew there was a better way and I put my analytical and computer science skills to work to devise a model to extract the broad market trend, and in turn benefit in both good and bad markets. After many years of research, and further testing and fine tuning with Serge, the Trend Timing Model emerged.

When and why did you decide to share the signal with others?

Serge: By 2001 we realized that not only was the system achieving tremendous results as compared to Buy and Hold, but it exceeded our requirements of simplicity and infrequent trading. As the Model made us successful individual investors, it was not a big leap to conclude that this approach could appeal to a lot of other people. We really felt this was too good to keep just for ourselves and, yes, we got bit by the entrepreneurial bug. Together with Frank we had the technical skills to create the required infrastructure and Web site, and by the fall of 2001 TimingCube was born. After an initial ramp-up period both of us gave up our previous careers to concentrate exclusively on our business and subscribers.

What makes TimingCube different from other market timing services?
Frank: It starts with extreme simplicity and consistently superior returns, but the crucial differentiator is the long-term orientation of the Model and resulting infrequent trading. As time passes and we further refine our Trend Timing philosophy, subscribers increasingly tell us that the system uniquely enables them to control the emotional side of investing, and makes it more likely they will stick with it for the long term and achieve their wealth building dreams.

So why not share the formula publicly?
Serge: We are not ashamed to say that a key motivation for the secrecy surrounding the Model has to do with collecting subscription fees and preserving our company's revenue. The truth is that no market timing system can survive if known by everyone. The stock market history is littered with examples of great investment systems becoming obsolete once revealed.

What is your current reading of the market and where do you see it go next?
Frank: Ah, a trick question! As our long time subscribers know full well, Trend Timers never attempt to explain why the market is doing what it does, or worse, predict what it is going to do next. Our Model listens to the market and extracts the broad predominant trend. Right now we are firmly planted in a Quadrant 1 Bull/Buy (See the for explanation of quadrants), and we also know that the next step will be a Quadrant 2 Bull/Sell, but we don't know when. While in a bull market the psychology and the probabilities are always favoring a resumption of the primary uptrend, and pull-backs and corrections should be viewed as opportunities to get in at lower prices.

How do you envision the future of TimingCube?
Serge: Although the Model itself has remained unchanged, long term subscribers have seen the service evolve greatly over time, and we are continuing the enhancements. Some of the developments are in direct response to your feedback, like the Signal by Phone functionality introduced recently (see the Other improvements are more transparent, much like some recent infrastructure upgrades that have dramatically enhanced the performance and availability of our site. Watch this space for a steady stream of new capabilities.
Frank: Serge and I, as well as the entire TimingCube Staff, are relentless and uncompromising about our commitment to integrity, quality, and customer service. These are always our first and foremost priorities. We all love what we do and we are committed to continuing serving you, our customer, for a long time to come with the Trend Timing system as you know it. Beyond that, we are working on research and development of additional complementary product offerings.

FAQ of the Week
Question: Can I use the service to invest in options, futures, E-minis and the like?

We are not options or futures traders ourselves and we do not provide related strategies because they are not for the average investor. However, there is nothing wrong with them for investors who know what they are doing. In fact, some of our subscribers do use our Model with options and futures instead of, or in addition to ETFs and mutual funds, quite successfully from what they tell us. It is certainly riskier, but there is more leverage. Ultimately, if you fully understand these investment vehicles and the associated risks, it is up to you to decide if this is something you want to do.

Warm wishes and until next week.

The TimingCube Staff
