Market Update
Both the Nasdaq 100 and the S&P 500 finished the shortened week almost unchanged, while the Russell 2000 lost 0.9%. After markets appeared to move decisively higher on Thursday morning, with the Dow briefly hitting a new multi-year high, they reversed course sharply on higher volume before stabilizing on Friday. The fact that Friday was an option expiration day probably exacerbated Thursday's drop.

Despite the week's swing, our Buy signal remains in effect.

Q1 2004 Subscriber Survey Results - Part 1

More than 800 subscribers — over one quarter of TimingCube’s subscriber base — participated in the online survey which concluded last Sunday February 15, 2004. The survey results will be presented in two waves, starting with the quantitative analysis presented here this week. The sheer number and volume of your comments and suggestions in the open ended question 21 deserve a more extensive review and, accordingly, the detailed results will be published next week. We also ask those of you who included specific questions requiring individual responses for a little patience while we process the answers over the next few days.

We can already say that by and large your feedback is overwhelmingly positive and supportive. You provided many great suggestions to enhance the service and we have already begun implementing the most popular ones. Watch this space next week for details.

Summary of survey responses.
This section summarizes the key findings for the quantitative survey questions. The complete results for questions 1 through 20 can be accessed by clicking here: Q1 2004 TimingCube Subscriber Survey Report.

What are subscribers saying about the markets?

  • 65% understand the difference between the illegal market timing practiced by some mutual funds and legitimate market timing
  • 74% don’t think the mutual fund market timing scandals diminished the legitimacy of market timing
  • 67% believe that revenue-sharing payments from mutual fund firms to brokers for promoting certain funds should be made illegal
  • As a direct result of the broker-mutual fund revenue-sharing issue, of the investors that use full service brokers, 63% will be suspicious of broker advice and a 7% will stop using full service brokers
  • Of the ones that express an opinion about the impact of the Presidential elections on the markets, 66% believe it will increase market returns this year

The survey also found trend timers are not sitting on the sidelines and are fairly savvy and sophisticated investors.

  • 96% said they had a winning year in 2003, of those subscribers, 36% invest 50% or more of their portfolio with the TimingCube signal
  • 80% (up from 58% 6 months ago) have less than a quarter of their portfolio in cash or money markets
  • A full 79% do without a financial advisor
  • Usage of ETFs nearly caught up with mutual funds at 56% versus 57%, erasing a 20% difference just 6 months ago
  • 82% manage to keep their trading costs under $500 per $10,000 invested
  • The value of the TimingCube service is perceived as providing higher value than an actively managed mutual fund by over 69% of respondents

Make sure you don't miss next week's review of the comments suggestions.

FAQ of the Week
How long will you be there?

A question we get fairly often goes like "OK, I have made a bunch of money in a year using your signal and I plan to be a subscriber till I die. What happens to the TimingCube service if you decide, in a couple of years, to retire with all the money you have made or you get run over by a truck?"

Our usual answer, after being thankful and glad that our service is working well for dedicated subscribers, is that this is nothing to be concerned about. We love what we are doing and we are in this for the long haul. We have no plans to disappear any time soon, and our greatest pleasure is to guide, assist and empower trend timers to achieve their financial dreams as we are. We have made provisions, with several principals, to insure reliable continuation of our business. If something should happen to one of them, TimingCube would continue to operate and the Trend Timing Model would go on. For all practical purposes, there is nothing you have to worry about. But thanks for warning us about trucks!

Warm wishes and until next week.

The TimingCube Staff
